A high-intensity car explosion near Delhi's iconic Red Fort killed at least eight people and injured 24 others on Monday evening, November 10, 2025. The deadly blast occurred around 6:52 PM near Gate 1 of the Lal Quila Metro Station, sending shockwaves through the densely populated Old Delhi area.
What Happened at Red Fort Metro Station
A slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light when a powerful explosion tore through the car, triggering a massive fire that engulfed multiple nearby vehicles. Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha confirmed that 2-3 people were inside the vehicle at the time of the blast. The explosion was so intense that it shattered street lights and windows of vehicles parked several meters away.
Six cars, four motorcycles, and three e-rickshaws caught fire following the blast. The Delhi Fire Department received the distress call at 6:55 PM and immediately dispatched seven fire tenders and 15 CAT ambulances to the scene. Firefighting crews successfully extinguished the flames by 7:36 PM.
Casualties and Injuries
Dr. B.L. Chaudhary, MD of Lok Nayak Hospital, confirmed eight fatalities and multiple injuries. The injured victims were rushed to LNJP Hospital, where security has been deployed outside the facility. Eyewitnesses described harrowing scenes with body parts scattered on the road amid complete chaos.
Location and Impact on Old Delhi
The explosion occurred on the busy stretch connecting Delhi Gate to Kashmere Gate, directly opposite the pedestrian area of Chandni Chowk and approximately 1.5 kilometers from Jama Masjid. This area near the 17th-century Mughal-era Red Fort is a major tourist destination and commercial hub experiencing heavy foot traffic daily.
Local shopkeeper accounts revealed the terror unleashed by the blast. One witness told ANI, "I never heard such a loud explosion ever in my life. When the blast happened I was sitting on a chair in my shop and I fell three times due to the explosion, I thought the earth was going to burst". Another resident, Rajdhar Pandey, stated the explosion was so powerful that windows shook with its intensity.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) restricted entry and exit at Gates 1 and 4 of Lal Qila station, though metro services continued operating normally across the network. All shops in Chandni Chowk were shut down as panic-stricken shoppers rushed to evacuate the crowded market area.
Investigation and Security Response
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and National Security Guard (NSG) commandos have arrived at the blast site. Multiple agencies including the Delhi Police Special Cell and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) teams are examining the scene. The entire area around Red Fort has been completely cordoned off as forensic experts conduct their investigation.
A high alert has been sounded across the national capital following the incident. The explosion comes on the same day Delhi Police busted an interstate terror module and recovered over 2,900 kilograms of suspected ammonium nitrate—a chemical used in making explosives—from a Faridabad residence.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, with Delhi's Home Minister receiving regular updates on the situation.
